Prince William is continuing his first day in Rio de Janeiro at a world-famous sports arena

The Prince of Wales will be sure to tell his 10-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, about one moment during his visit to Maracanã

The soccer fan also got to kick a penalty shot during the outing

Prince William will be returning home from Brazil with stories that will thrill his children, especially his soccer-loving daughter, Princess Charlotte.

The Prince of Wales, 43, visited the world-famous Maracanã, where the Brazilian national soccer team plays its games, during his first day in Brazil on Monday, Nov. 3, as part of the events surrounding his Earthshot Prize awards. He packed his soccer shoes for his trip to South America, sporting sustainable trainers from Mr. Marvis with his button-down shirt and slacks during the outing.

The royal was joined by legendary Brazilian soccer star Cafú as well as some young athletes, including girls who were likely around his 10-year-old daughter's age. The group participated in some drills before William stepped up to take part in a penalty kick contest.

As youngsters chanted his first name, William took a shot — and although the goalie got a hand on the ball, it went in to score.

Afterward, Ricardo Calcado — cofounder of Terra Football Club, a campaign movement that brings together football clubs, players, schools, NGOs and governments to “talk about the planet and talk about the climate crisis" — told PEOPLE that Prince William "scored a beautiful goal at Maracanã. He was very impressed and happy to see children playing sports and talk about the environment."

Calcado added that though he expected the children to be nervous, they were "so natural" as they interacted with William.

"Our kids loved it, and Prince William was extremely delighted and asked many questions and interacted with the kids. It was beautiful," says Calcado, adding that "his aura and his energy show he’s really got a purpose. It was a very special moment for us."

Prince William was seen high-fiving and hugging the young athletes, clearly bonding over their love of soccer. The royal's three children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, 7 — have also inherited a love of the sport. In fact, William once called Charlotte a "budding star" in soccer as he met England's women's team.

Prince William's first job at the stadium was to meet some of the young champions of conservation and the environment who had arrived from across the vast country to see him.

The Prince of Wales spent some time talking to members of the Generation Earthshot Program, named for his Earthshot Prize, which is the focus of the week in Rio.

The gathering of the young environmental champions mirrored one of his first events in Cape Town, South Africa, last year in showcasing the next generation of climate leaders. It's something that "is incredibly important to the prince," his spokesman said.

He joined 50 young Brazilians, who were selected from over 500 applicants and aged between 18-30, as well as 25 young people from Asia and South Africa, creating a cross-cultural exchange. The Brazilians were drawn from grassroots collectives, Indigenous federations, academia, and social enterprises, and traveled from diverse regions and key ecological zones in Brazil, such as the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest.

Their trip to the Maracanã is part of a four-day program including workshops and panels — and the chance to be inspired by Cafú, who is the Brazilian player with the most appearances for the national team and was captain of the squad that won the 2002 soccer World Cup. Ahead of the visit, he said he was “excited” to “meet these incredible young people, the future leaders from around the world who will drive change for our planet."

"It’s inspiring to see this energy coming from Brazil, a country with such creativity, passion and potential, and I’m proud to support them on this journey," he said.

Also at the event at the stadium were young representatives from The Mini Cop program, which is running throughout the week ahead of the COP30 climate talks.

Xolile Mabuza, who took part in last year’s Earthshot Generation event in Cape Town, said in a statement, “Being surrounded by fellow young innovators, passionate facilitators, and the inspiring Earthshot community – including His Royal Highness Prince William – has truly expanded my sense of what’s possible. Since participating, I’ve built a first-of-its-kind factory in my village to produce our eco-friendly bags, created local jobs, increased our recycling capacity, and started tracking our environmental impact. This program is more than just a network; it's a community that inspires me to keep pushing for a better future.”

Earlier on Nov. 3, soon after his arrival on a commercial flight from London, Prince William visited the stunning Sugarloaf Mountain, looking down over the Rio de Janeiro shoreline, as he was welcomed by the city's Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Prince William is in the beachside Brazilian city ahead of his Earthshot Prize awards evening on Nov. 5. There, a star-studded show starring Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes will herald the latest winners of his five prizes that reward innovative and groundbreaking ideas to tackle environmental challenges. Earthshot is halfway through the decade that William set aside to find solutions to the planet’s issues.

“It’s an exciting time to be in Brazil as across Latin America environmental leaders are driving bold, innovative approaches to protect and restore vital ecosystems like the Amazon, while creating local jobs and economic opportunities," his spokesman said in a pre-tour briefing.

Ahead of the awards evening on Nov. 5, the CEO of the Earthshot Prize, Jason Knauf, says, “With its energy, its people and its iconic landscapes, it is the perfect place to celebrate amazing environmental innovation and host our biggest and best Earthshot ever."

Rio follows the inaugural awards in London in 2021, followed by events in Boston, Singapore and last year's ceremony in Cape Town. It also marks the first time Prince William has been to Latin America on official business.
