Simu Liu is revealing his one wedding must-have.
The Marvel star, 36, exclusively spoke with PEOPLE at an Oh, Mary! press event in New York City on Monday, Feb. 2, the day before his Broadway debut as "Mary's Teacher." During the conversation, Liu brought up another exciting new role: groom!
The actor, who is engaged to Allison Hsu, jokes that wedding planning was "really wonderful" — until he saw the prices.

"Everything's been good. I would say we're at the point now where it's probably my least favorite, it's where I'm finding out how much everything costs," Liu shares. "And I really do think no matter what your budget is, it's always going to cost more than you think. Everything always costs more than you think. That's definitely true for us as well."
Despite the high costs, Liu notes wedding planning overall has been a "relatively pain-free and joyous process," especially because the couple has the same non-negotiable.
"Good music," the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star says. "You're throwing a party with your best friends in the whole wide world and, of course, it's our day but it's also their day. It's just a day to celebrate kind of everyone being together and sharing in our happy moment. And so, just making sure that our musical acts are all lined up and ready to go."
Liu and Hsu, who began dating in 2022, announced their engagement in May after The Copenhagen Test star popped the question in Paris, France.
Amid wedding planning, Liu has been focused on nailing his "Mary's Teacher" character in Oh, Mary! He admits it's both an exciting and nerve-racking experience.

"I'm feeling a combination of excited and terrified," he tells PEOPLE. "I'm really excited by the entire experience, the community has been so warm and welcoming and great. We're hitting that point in rehearsals now where we're just dying to do it in front of an audience, so in that way it's very exciting."
He continues, "And then terrified because there's always that moment right before, I'm waiting in the wings, and I come on for my first scene, there's always a moment where I feel like I'm just going to blank and not know anything. That anxiety is both bad and good in a way, keeps you on your toes, keeps you feeling alive."
