Bexar County, Texas, voters have spoken, and they believe the San Antonio Spurs deserve a new stadium. Voters passed a measure Tuesday enabling the team to develop and build a new $1.3 billion arena in downtown San Antonio, according to KENS 5.
The measure, known on the ballot as Proposition B, passed with 52 percent of the vote. With the measure passed, Bexar County will contribute $311 million in funds toward the new arena. The city of San Antonio is expected to contribute $498 million. The team will kick in $500 million plus cost overruns, per KENS 5.
The Spurs' new arena is part of Project Marvel, a project aimed at revamping the city's downtown area and creating a new sports and entertainment district at Hemisfair, the site of the 1968 World’s Fair.
In addition to approving a measure aimed at building a new Spurs arena, Bexar County voters also approved a measure devoting $192 million in funding to renovate Frost Bank Center for the San Antonio Rodeo.
Both the rodeo and Spurs currently host events at Frost Bank Center. Renovations to the arena would enable it to host year-round events when the Spurs' lease expires in 2032. With Proposition B passed and a new arena on the way, the Spurs would presumably be ready to leave Front Bank Arena when the team's lease is up.
In order to secure the necessary funds for the Spurs' new downtown stadium, Bexar County "will raise its hotel rental tax rate from 1.75% to 2% ... as well as funds from an existing 5% car rental tax – to help pave the future of entertainment in San Antonio," per KENS 5.
While the Spurs arena measure was passed, the team has cautioned it could take half a decade to build and develop the stadium. That could coincide perfectly with the team's return to prominence. After two straight excellent seasons, 21-year-old big man Victor Wembanyama has taken his game to another level in Year 3.
Despite Wembanyama's excellence, the Spurs haven't posted winning seasons with the former No. 1 overall pick. But that could change this year, as Wembanyama has the Spurs off to a 5-1 start.
If Wembanyama can continue on this trajectory, he could be the unquestioned face of the NBA by the time the Spurs begin playing in their new arena.
