Since 2017, Paramount+ has been the home of the Star Trek universe. But as several five-year missions are ending, one is just beginning. The upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy officially premieres on Jan. 15, 2026, and will introduce a new class of cadets. While some hardcore Trekkies have already nicknamed it Starfleet 90210, others are looking forward to the series that'll spawn future captains and Starfleet leaders.

Here is everything you about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, including the plot, cast—featuring Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti—and how to watch.

What is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy about?

This new Paramount+ series follows a group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers. But as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries and first loves, the cadets must also face a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Holly Hunter takes on the role of captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy. Ake is half-Lathanite—the same species as Strange New Worlds' Pelia (Carol Kane)—and is over 400 years old when she takes on the role of Chancellor.

Hunter won the Oscar for her role in The Piano, which also landed Anna Paquin an Oscar in her first major acting role. She has also been nominated for an Academy Award for her roles in Broadcast News, The Firm and Thirteen. Other roles Hunter is known for include Raising Arizona, voicing Elastigirl in The Incredibles and starring and producing the television series Saving Grace.

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau told Variety. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka.Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka

Paul Giamatti joins the cast in a recurring guest star role, playing Nus Braka, a half-Klingon, half-Tellarite villain with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets. Showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau said of Giamatti, "Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us. The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast."

Giamatti is probably best known for his role in Sideways. He has been nominated for many awards, including SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globes and, most recently, an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Holdovers. Previous credits include award-winning turns in the television series Too Big to Fail and the limited series John Adams.
