"There was no leaning in, per se," Sydney Sweeney said of her and Glen Powell's approach to the romance rumors that surrounded their 2023 rom-com Anyone But You
Powell's ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris, whom he split from while filming that movie, criticized him for not squashing the rumors that he and Sweeney were having an off-screen affair
Sweeney said that she and Powell are "always open to" making an Anyone But You sequel
Sydney Sweeney is insisting that she and Glen Powell didn't fuel the romance rumors that went viral as they promoted 2023's hit romantic comedy Anyone But You.
In a recent interview with Variety surrounding her new movie Christy, the actress, 28, addressed the media frenzy that surrounded her and Powell, 37, throughout the run-up to Anyone But You's release. "The press did it to themselves," she said of the buzz the pair generated at the time. (Powell's split from his ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris that year, as well as his and Sweeney's onscreen chemistry, led to romance rumors between the two actors.)
"There was no leaning in, per se," Sweeney said of she and Powell dealt with the speculation. "Truly the tabloids and journalists just created it and kept going. Even if we were just standing next to each other, it was ‘They’re standing two inches apart!’ "
"Glen and I genuinely care for each other and have a love and respect for one another," she added. "I love being with him. And I think people just truly saw a really beautiful pairing.”

Sweeney's latest remarks on the topic come months after Powell's ex Paris recounted her side of her split from Powell during a June appearance on the Too Much podcast, in which she criticized her ex for not shutting down relationship rumors between him and Sweeney while they were still dating. (Sweeney was engaged to her ex-fiancé Jonathan Davino at that time; the pair split in May.)
Paris also claimed during that podcast appearance that she was "not allowed anywhere near" Anyone But You's production back in 2023. "Everybody’s always going to have their own narrative on things and all that. And she’s welcome to it," Powell, for his part, told GQ of Paris' podcast interview in a September interview. “Relationships are really hard. And when two people break up, they each go to their own brunch and they will each tell their own narrative.” — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Both Powell and Sweeney, who is now dating recording executive Scooter Braun, have suggested in the past that they took a more active role in keeping Anyone But You fans invested in a theoretical off-screen romance. “They want it,” she told Variety of the rumors in an August 2023 interview. “It’s fun to give it to ’em.” As Powell told The New York Times in April 2024, "Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”
As for making a sequel to Anyone But You, Sweeney told Variety on Oct. 27 that she and Powell are "always open to it." "I think that when the right concept and script come to Glen and I, we will jump in hand in hand," she added.
Sweeney's next movie Christy is in theaters Nov. 7.
