- Morgan Metzer left her husband, Rodney Metzer, after enduring years of alleged abuse.

- Just weeks after their divorced was finalized, a masked intruder broke into her home and assaulted her.

- Morgan now aims to support survivors and raise awareness about domestic abuse.

Morgan Metzer and her ex-husband, Rodney Metzer, met when they were teenagers. The high school sweethearts eventually married and had twins, and from the outside, everything looked perfect — but life at home was much darker.

She endured years of emotional and physical abuse, culminating in a brutal attack just after midnight on Jan. 1, 2021, just weeks after her divorce from Rodney was finalized.

Morgan's story was later adapted into the 2024 Lifetime movie *Gaslit by My Husband*, starring Jana Kramer and Austin Nichols. The film has since garnered attention on Netflix, where it currently sits on the streamer's top 10 movies chart.

Of course, a movie can only tell us so much. Here's what happened to Morgan Metzer and what her life looks like today.

Who is Morgan Metzer?

Morgan was just 14 when she met Rodney, who was 17 at the time. She said on CBS' *48 Hours* that things between them moved fast, with Rodney treating her like a princess. They later got married in 2009, when Morgan was 21.

But less than a year into their marriage, tragedy struck when Rodney's 19-year-old brother Kevin died from leukemia. According to his mother Kathy, this loss hit him hard and made him increasingly dependent on Morgan. Not long after, their first child, a son named Kevin, died at just 18 days old from a congenital heart defect.

A few months later, in 2012, Morgan and Rodney welcomed twins — a boy and a girl — and things seemed to stabilize. But around the time the babies turned one, as Rodney lost his job and Morgan's interior design business began to thrive, his behavior shifted.

According to Morgan, the relationship turned abusive. She claimed Rodney physically and emotionally hurt her, manipulated her into believing she was to blame, and subjected her to gaslighting and sexual abuse.

She also alleged that Rodney used their kids to reinforce his lies. "He pretended I pushed him down the stairs and he literally rolled down the stairs," she said on *48 Hours*. "You know, he actually got hurt and said to the kids, 'Look, Mommy pushed me downstairs. Can you believe that?'"

Morgan filed for divorce from Rodney in 2020, and it was finalized that December. She thought she could move on, but Rodney wouldn't let her.

He claimed he had cancer and tried to convince her to take him back. Morgan said on *48 Hours *that she let him stay at her house for a bit, but by New Year's Eve, she had enough and told him to leave. He kept harassing her with texts like, "You need to get back with me. I'll make enough money. You can quit your job right now."

That night, a masked intruder broke into Morgan's home around 1 a.m., carrying a gun and changing his voice to hide his identity, mimicking a similar tone to Batman. The assailant beat her, tried to strangle her, zip-tied her hands, and sexually assaulted her. Morgan told *The Sun*, "I knew I was going to die."

At one point, the intruder tried to scare Morgan, saying she was "going to miss [her] husband," per Morgan's account to *48 Hours*. But she stayed calm and told him how much she loved Rodney. "Instantly the whole mood of the room changed. I wasn't going to die," she recalled to *The Sun*. "He then decided to pretend like he was stealing jewelry or stealing bags, stealing my phone or whatnot. He started acting like an actual burglar, not a murderer."

What evidence tied Rodney to Morgan’s attack?

Morgan remained of the back deck with a pillow case over her head until Rodney arrived at the scene around 40 minutes later, according to *48 Hours*.** **He called 911 and later told police he had rushed over after hearing someone knock on his apartment window and calling out her name. Investigators were skeptical of his story, and Morgan later said on *48 Hours *that she had suspected he was the attacker.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported that authorities uncovered evidence linking Rodney to the attack. They found copies of Morgan's texts and photos of her in the shower, security footage showing him buying the same zip ties used in the assault, and an open bag of matching zip ties in his apartment.

His internet searches were disturbing, including queries like "how to change the sound of your voice" and "how long to choke someone unconscious." Investigators also discovered a suicide note and a fake hospital invoice he had used to convince Morgan he had cancer — the same lie he used to manipulate her into letting him to stay at her house.

Cherokee County District Attorney

Rachel** **Ashe, the deputy chief assistant district attorney for Cherokee County, told *48 Hours *that she talked with Morgan about whether to take Rodney to trial or offer a plea deal. They decided a plea would let Morgan get closure sooner. Rodney ultimately pleaded guilty to 14 counts related to Morgan's attack and the images authorities found on his phone.

At his sentencing, Morgan read a victim impact statement, which she shared on *48 Hours*: "Rod, not only will this statement be to my attacker, but it'll also be my last words to whom I thought was the love of my life," she said. "The last four years being married to you was like living with a monster that constantly tried to break me down and fence me in… It was a blessing in disguise… I can now walk with the confidence knowing the pain you have given me is turned into power."

On Aug. 4, 2021, a judge sentenced Rodney to 70 years — 25 in prison and 45 on probation — and** **barred him from contacting Morgan and their children. He's currently serving time at Baldwin State Prison in Hardwick, Ga., per A&E.

"This man is a master manipulator," Ashe said, per WHDH Boston. District Attorney Shannon Wallace added, "I cannot imagine how terrifying this must have been for her. This is a classic example of how the most dangerous time for a domestic violence victim is when she decides to leave an abusive relationship."

Rodney's mother, Kathy Metzer, revealed on *48 Hours *that he has type 1 diabetes and his that health has been deteriorating quickly in prison. "I'm absolutely worried he's going to die," she said.

Where is Morgan Metzer now?

Once the worst was behind her, Morgan started going to therapy to work through her trauma and find a sense of healing. Now, she's focused on raising her kids and using her experience to help others.

"I'm trying to raise awareness for … narcissism and gaslighting," she explained on *48 Hours*. "I want to help women realize they're in a situation before it gets too bad."

Morgan's story later became the basis for the Lifetime movie, *Gaslit by My Husband*. In June 2024, she told *Today* that seeing her life portrayed on screen was difficult at times, but it gives her strength to support other victims and survivors.

"If I don't take the bad that came of this, that I feel that God wants me to do, it's like, why did it happen," Metzer says. "It would happen for no reason. I've got to take the pain and turn that into something that’s powerful to help women."
