Jamie Foxx and Alyce Huckstepp are expecting their first child together after rekindling their relationship following a brief breakup in January 2025

"When they found their way back to each other, Jamie was in a much better place," an insider tells PEOPLE

Foxx and Huckstepp first sparked dating rumors in August 2023, and earlier this month, a source confirmed that the actor and his girlfriend are expecting their first child together

Jamie Foxx and girlfriend Alyce Huckstepp are in a good place in their relationship as they prepare to welcome their first baby together, a source tells PEOPLE.

The source said on Friday, May 15, that the actor, 58, is excited about becoming a dad again — and is in a much better place than when he and Huckstepp temporarily split.

"When Alyce first came into his life and they started dating, Jamie was still recovering from the stroke," a source tells PEOPLE, referring to the actor's April 2023 stroke that left him temporarily unable to walk. "He really enjoyed dating her and thought she was special, but it was also a difficult time for him personally."

According to the source, Foxx (who is already a dad of two) was working on getting his career back in order after his medical issues, leading to his brief breakup from Huckstepp.

"He was trying to get his life and his career back at the same time," the source explains. "It wasn't that he didn't care about her. It was more that he was trying to get back to normal while also figuring out how to balance a serious relationship again."

PEOPLE previously reported that while filming Netflix's Back in Action in Atlanta, Foxx suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke. Things were "touch and go" for roughly 15 days, and the actor was in the hospital and rehab for months, relearning to walk and talk, he later said.

"When they found their way back to each other, Jamie was in a much better place," the insider added of Foxx and Huckstepp on Friday. "He feels more like himself again now. He's genuinely very happy about becoming a dad again."

Foxx and Huckstepp were first linked after being spotted in public together in August 2023 when they dined with a group at Nobu in Malibu, Calif. At the time, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair were an item.

Multiple sources later confirmed their split to PEOPLE in January 2025, though they were spotted together on several occasions in the months to follow.

By May 12, PEOPLE confirmed that the pair were expecting a child together.

The Oscar-winning actor first became a father in 1994 with the birth of his daughter Corinne, 31, whom he shares with ex Connie Kline. Fifteen years later, he welcomed his second daughter, Anelise Bishop, 17, with his ex Kristin Grannis.

Though the couple hasn't commented publicly on their relationship, and Foxx has been candid about keeping his relationships out of the spotlight in the past, Huckstepp has supported Foxx at a number of events.

In October 2024, she attended the Atlanta taping of his Netflix comedy special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was... and was seen toasting the comedian after the show.

Additionally, in July 2023, a source told PEOPLE Huckstepp was on set while Foxx filmed a BetMGM commercial.

“Jamie, especially, is very low key about his life in general, and rarely talks about it,” a source told PEOPLE about the actor's dating life in 2018. “He is not one to acknowledge anything about his private life.”
