A Reddit user offered her family a different way to split the bill for a recent birthday dinner that cost $900 for 7 people

“My sister and her husband picked up the bill and suggested splitting it three ways,” she said

Readers seemed to side with her, with one saying, “Your math is mathing”

A family dinner has left a bitter taste in one woman’s mouth.

The woman explained on Reddit’s “Am I the A------?” forum that she doesn’t want to evenly split the bill with her sisters for a recent birthday dinner because her siblings brought their significant others.

“My two sisters and I took our dad out for his birthday,” the woman wrote. “There were seven of us: dad, mom, sister #1, her husband, sister #2, her boyfriend and me. My sister and her husband picked up the bill, which came to $900, and suggested splitting it three ways — $300 each.”

She continued, “I didn’t think this was fair because it would mean I’m covering my sisters’ significant others in addition to my own portion.”

The woman noted that she “was more than happy” to pay for her parents.

“An extra $85 is significant for me,” she said after crunching the numbers.

The woman divided the $900 by 7, the amount of people attending the dinner, which came out to about $129 per person.

She then took her parents’ combined $258 amount and divided that by 3 (for her and her two sisters’ contributions), which came out to $86.

With that, she added that $86 to her $129 portion, which came out to $215 instead of the suggested $300 her sibling wanted her to pay.

Wondering if she’s in the wrong, the woman asked Redditors, “Am I the a------ for suggesting to split a bill a different way?”

Many readers sided with the the woman in this situation, with one person simply commenting, “Your math is mathing.”

Another Redditor agreed, responding, “Your suggestion is more equitable. It sounds like your sisters want to take advantage of you. There’s no way you should be paying for part of their partners’ meals.”

However, some users offered a counterpoint. "You're not wrong, neither is your sister," one person wrote. "Since they have significant others you had to have known that those extra 2 people were coming so if the extra expense was going to be an issue for you, then that's something you should have brought up with your sisters and discussed it beforehand."

They continued, "It's an obvious thing for them both to infer that the bill would be split evenly between the 3 of you. So you're not an ass for it, especially if money is tight, but you should have brought it up before because, after the meal, you are gonna look like an ass to them."
